Off The Beaten Path: Ethel Catherwood | Video

Cliff Naylor | 7/30/2012

North Dakota has produced just one native-born Olympic gold medalist. You would think since our state has only a single champion, that person would hold a place of honor in the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Hall of Fame, or their likeness cast in a statue and displayed on the capitol grounds.

Instead, very few residents even know this person`s name.

Fourteen years ago, Cliff Naylor researched the history of this obscure athlete and we revisit that classic Off the Beaten Path report from 1998.

Ethel Catherwood`s Gold Medal winning jump at the 1928 Olympic games was 5` 2 9/16".

Over the next two weeks, 10,500 athletes will compete in the London games. While there are no native born North Dakotans in this year`s games, three out-of-state athletes that attended Dickinson State University and one from NDSU will compete in the 30th Olympiad.
