New Library Card Requirements | Video

Sarahbeth Ackerman | 8/6/2012

If you are new to the area and want to check out library books, there are a few new requirements to receive your library card. Any person wishing to check out reading materials out of the Minot Public Library must have a library card.

To apply for that card, patrons should provide proof of a local address and photo identification.

Acceptable forms of proof of address include: an unexpired lease agreement; any official mail received with the borrower`s address on it; a current property tax statement or a valid vehicle registration with the current address.

"We have been discussing it for a while actually, and with all of the new people coming into town, and living all over the place, we can`t verify addresses anymore. And so when people have overdue items and we try and contact them, we run into problems. And so with this new system, it will guarantee that people are providing us with a real address," said Technical Services Librarian Sarah Ethier.

Although people were always required to have a permanent address to use the library, it was never mandatory to provide proof of residency.

The new policy will begin on August 20.
