Out with the old and in with the new.

"Definitely jeans are changing. They`re going for the slim/straight jeans. We`re selling quite a lot of those and plaids seem to be very popular at the moment along with novelty t-shirts," said JC Penney Accessory Specialist Shaleah Kaml.

Fashion trends are always changing. But for back-to-school shoppers, like Pattie Benton and Kelvin Vinson, they`re sticking to the necessities.

"Just your basic school clothes, trying to get him the modern look again," said Benton.

While Benton and Vinson are just shopping for the basics today, some are looking to trends for inspiration.

"Right now, certainly denim is very important for kids,” said JC Penney Store Leader Dean Kuntz. "In juniors, we`re seeing a lot of like, neon looks. In guys, we`re seeing a lot of plaid with the button up shirts. But, denim and shoes and tops are our top three categories right now."

But, all those trends could cost you some big money.

"We`re seeing in the $150-200 range by the time you add in shoes and a couple of shirts, some pants, and you`re basic socks and underwear, things like that,” said Kuntz.

In addition to clothing, families are also shopping for school supplies. Before you start your back-to-school shopping, it`s always a good idea to look through the sale ads and find out where your best deals are. By starting early, you`re going to find the best products for the best prices.

"Watch the sale ads, you know, stop in weekly and see what`s on sale,” said Staples General Manager Roxann Schuman. "A lot of people like to just come in one trip and they`re done. But you`re going to end up paying a lot more than, you know, watching the ads."

But, don`t forget, back-to-school shopping can be hectic.

"Back-to-school is definitely one of the busiest times of the year. It gets a little crazy, especially once August hits, we see the big back-to-school rush," said Schuman.

It`s a month long rush stores are prepared to handle.
