No Veterans On Presidential Ticket | Video

Jessica Roose | 8/14/2012

When you think of the presidential race you likely don`t see many similarities between the Romney/Ryan and Obama/Biden tickets. But there is at least one: neither pair has any military experience. The last presidential election with no veteran was the 1932 race between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover.

Everyone wants to know how the presidential candidates and their running mates stand on several key issues and those who have served say it`s important to remember military veterans.

"The biggest thing that we have to really concentrate on now is when the soldiers come back, depression, that`s the big thing. We need to get them counseling," said U.S. Army Veteran Robert Olzweski.

Olzweski served in the Army for nearly 40 years, even earning a purple heart. He says while it`s nice to have a president with past military experience who understands these issues, he doesn`t think it`s everything.

"Being that the war is downsizing, they are actually looking maybe for more of what I call a warrior, to help them take care of the budget and not maybe concentrate on war. War seems to be on the bottom of American`s issues right now."

University of Mary political science professor Mark Springer says there are several reasons why we might start to see less veterans holding political office.

"There`s been almost a different push, an emphasis in schools. That you`re going to go to college, instead of going in the military. Maybe some of that has to shift as well to get people different experiences in the world."

Both agree that it shouldn`t have too much of an impact on the election as many Americans seem focused on other issues facing the country.

While neither ticket has a veteran on it, Springer says whoever wins will likely look to fill their cabinet with members who have that military background.
