Renovations at the YMCA | Video

Joel Porter | 8/20/2012

A fitness center in Bismarck is in the midst of more than a quarter million dollars in renovations. Workers at the YMCA are improving both the Kerr Pool and the Johnson Gym. Workers drained the pool so they can replace much of the tile and underground pipes. The gym has been roped off while workers are sanding and resurfacing the wood floor.

Supervisors say late August is an ideal time to tackle the work, since member usage typically drops at this time of year.

"The timing is so good for us now with the lighter member use because once we progress through the fall and into the winter, we could see as much as 50 to 60 thousand visits each month," said Acting Executive Director Bill Bauman.

Workers say it takes nearly a week to fill and heat the 185,000 gallon pool.

Both the gym and the pool are expected to be reopened after Labor Day.
