Increasing Speeding Fines | Video

Sarahbeth Ackerman | 8/24/2012

If you`ve ever been pulled over for speeding in North Dakota, you may have noticed how affordable the tickets are, but that could be changing soon. The average price for a speeding ticket could cost you anywhere from $10 to $20, depending on the violation.

However, if the legislature`s proposal is passed, the price of speeding tickets across the state would double.

"We walk up with the citation and it`s a $20 fine, especially people from out of state will almost say, `Oh you`re joking, is that all it is? Why are you even bothering giving me a ticket if its gonna be $10 or $20 dollars?` And, well, we`re gonna do our job. We don`t set the fines, our agency does it, so we are gonna do what we can to keep people safe. This would be a positive step with increasing traffic safety with North Dakota," said Captain Gary Orluck with the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Orluck says if the proposal passes both in the House and Senate, the price hike would go into effect next summer.
