National Park to Use Aerial Spraying for Weeds

| 9/7/2012

Starting next week, Theodore Roosevelt National Park will utilize aerial spraying for weed control. On Monday, September 10, helicopter crews will be spraying in both the North and South Units to control leafy spurge and Canada thistle. The park plans to treat 1,400 acres.

The park will remain open during spraying operations, but visitors should avoid areas that are being sprayed or have just been sprayed.

"Some visitors may find the low flying helicopter to be an intrusion," said Superintendent Valerie Naylor. "We never want to intrude upon the visitors` enjoyment of the park, even for a day. However, the need to control leafy spurge and Canada thistle and their impact on the park`s native vegetation makes this short-term inconvenience a necessity."

People with questions should contact the park at 701-623-4466
