Game and Fish Expects Large Duck Flight

| 9/10/2012

According to Game and Fish surveys, waterfowl hunters this fall can expect a large flight. The fall flight data is based on the May breeding duck survey and the July brood survey.

"This year`s production was up from last year, and there are strong indications for a good fall flight this year," said game management section leader Mike Johnson. "However, late summer has been dry and hunters should scout their favorite areas to check water conditions prior to the opener."

The department says that the mid-July brood index survey was up 110 percent from last year and exceeded the long-term average by 155 percent. They also say the the results from the May breeding duck survey show the duck index was up 16 percent from last year.

Opening day for ducks, coots, mergansers and geese is September 22 for North Dakota residents and September 29 for nonresidents.
