Constitution Day at BSC | Video

Joel Porter | 9/17/2012

Bismarck State College is trying to get more students excited about the upcoming election. And Monday morning, the college honored a long-time Bismarck businessman. The school planted an American Elm in honor of Floyd Boutrous, an immigrant from Syria who for decades, traveled the world and owned property in Bismarck.

As part of the day, BSC also encouraged students to text their votes supporting either the Electoral College or the popular vote to choose a president.

BSC`s president, Dr. Larry Skogen, says Boutrous was an outspoken advocate of the U.S. Constitution.

"And not only that, he wanted to ensure that everybody else knew how important it was. And so he took it as a personal mission all throughout our community to make sure folks understood how important the U.S. Constitution was."

Dan Cashman, who donated the tree, says it is resistant to Dutch Elm disease.
