Mandan School Bond Passes | Video

Kristin Clouston | 9/25/2012

Mandan residents have made it clear they want a new elementary school and now they`re going to get it. Mandan administrators thought Tuesday`s school bond vote was going to be a close one, so they`re pretty happy with a 78.3 percent yes vote.

There were 2,021 people who voted yes on the $12.5 million bond and 560 said no. Mandan has large class sizes and had to add an extra section of Kindergarten at Lewis and Clark this fall.

Administrators say they need the school now and are ready to get down to business.

Assistant superintendent Jeff Lind said, "We`ll have a pretty good celebration to start! Obviously that will be a good thing to begin work right away. Right away then, I`m sure we will meet with our architect and begin the design phase at the location to determine how we`ll go forward with the actual construction."

They`re hoping it will be ready next fall. The new school will be about the same size as Roosevelt and Mary Stark and will be built in northwest Mandan at the intersection of 37th Ave NW and Lewis Road. The property also has green space that could possibly be used for baseball or soccer fields.
