Proposed Chemical Storage Facility Near School | Video

Jenny Castro | 9/26/2012

The Minot Planning Commission has approved a special use permit that allows Baker Hughes Oilfield Operations extra storage for chemicals. Baker Hughes is located along the north side of the Highway 83 bypass which is just north of the location for the new Erik Ramstad Middle School.

The company brought back their request after fulfilling concerns from the Minot Public Schools. Bakker Hughes is taking major safety measures at the facility.

"We feel very comfortable in the safety precautions that are taken by Baker Hughes, these chemicals will be stored inside, where they do have a fire suppression system, if they were not stored inside they`d be stored outside, there`d be more danger,” said Minot Public Schools superintendent Mark Vollmer.

Minot Public Schools hired a professional company to do an environmental study on the types of chemicals used before reaching a decision.
