Carving Celebrates 35th Hostfest | Video

Hostfest President David Reiten received a unique gift today from a pair of Icelandic sculptors.

Located in Helsinki Hall sits a hand-sculpted commemorative sculpture with the words "Norsk Hostfest" carved into the wood.

We caught up with the artists to hear their unique story.

“As an Icelandic artisan, Icelandic American artisan working in America, I`m a little lonesome,” said American Icelandic sculptor Tryggvi Thorlief Larum. “I thought, is there another one out there? I went on the Internet one day and began searching and finally his name came up. And, when it did, I examined his work and I said, oh my god, it`s magnificent. So, I sent him an email and I got a phone call back from Iceland immediately in California. And, that`s how it began."

Once the pair met, they didn’t waste any time. They started creating unique sculptures right away.

“I did the preparations back home and brought it to America in pieces and then I went to his home in California and then we put it together and carved it a little bit more, brought it here. And, we just finished the piece,” said wood carver Jon Adolf Steinolfsson.

The sculpture will be on display for the rest of Hostfest.
