Burleigh County to Raise Highway Fees | Video

Joel Porter | 10/1/2012

Some Burleigh County communities may soon pay more to have their roads maintained. The Burleigh County Highway Department is proposing a 20 percent increase in the fees charged to townships.

The county maintains about 500 miles of roads in 47 townships. That includes both grading and snowplowing, as well as mowing the ditches.

County Engineer Marcus Hall says the department is only paid a fraction of the cost of those services.

"We understand to actually get it up to the dollar figure it has to be would probably break some of the townships, so we`re trying to gradually get it up closer to what our costs are."

Hall says most townships can`t simply raise taxes since many of them are already maxed out on levies. The new fees won`t be approved for two more weeks.
