Cutting Off Ponytails for Locks of Love | Video

Michelle San Miguel | 10/6/2012

Most women have a special attachment to their hair which is why losing it to a sickness can be very difficult. Many people were donating inches of their hair Saturday to Locks of Love, which gives hairpieces to children who suffer from hair loss.

Hairstylists at Mane Expressions in Mandan cut off about 26 ponytails. The owner says between six to eight ponytails go into making just one wig.

Cutting hair is more than just a profession for these stylists. They say the work becomes emotional when they have to shave customers` heads who start losing their hair during cancer treatments.

"I think we`ve all had several clients that have gone through it so yeah makes it kind of hard because yeah we`ve all known someone to lose their hair to either alopecia or to cancer," said Lisa Ripplinger, co-owner of Mane Expressions.

Many customers said they felt like a different person and were happy to know their hair was going to someone in need.
