Various polls have put the race as a tossup.
Here`s what our latest Mason-Dixon poll, conducted October 3-5, indicates:
Our poll of 625 likely voters in North Dakota has the US Senate race in a dead heat. It shows both Berg and Heitkamp with 47 percent of the vote while there is six percent undecided.
Some interesting findings about the race: There is a gender gap, Berg wins with men 51 to 42 per cent while Heitkamp wins with women 51 to 44. Area-wise, Heitkamp wins in Berg`s home territory -- Fargo -- by a 50 to 41 margin and Berg tops Heitkamp in Bismarck-Mandan by a 58 to 38 margin. Among the voters who say they are independent, Heitkamp holds a 48 to 43 margin.
The House race shows Public Service Commissioner Kevin Cramer with a 12 point edge over Democrat Pam Gulleson. Our poll has Cramer in front 49 percent to 37 percent. That margin holds up across most demographics.
Our poll also indicates that North Dakota is going to go Republican again in the presidential race. Challenger Mitt Romney holds a 54 to 40 advantage over President Barack Obama. Romney`s support is a little thinner in Fargo and eastern ND. He wins in Fargo 50 to 44 and in eastern North Dakota the numbers are knotted at 47 to 47. Romney does have big leads in Bismarck-Mandan 58 to 35 and in western ND 61 to 33.
Our poll, by the way, has a margin of error of plus or minus four percent. Tomorrow we will look at several state races and see who the voters are leaning toward in those contests.
