Fairmount Teen Shoots Himself During School | Video

Valley News Live | 10/11/2012

The Richland County Sheriff`s office says a Fairmount teen survived a suicide attempt at school. The high school was locked down for about an hour and classes were cancelled for the day.

The 112 students in the Fairmount school district were in total shock when news spread that one of their class mates pulled the trigger on himself. The shooting took place just 10 minutes after the first bell rang. The freshmen apparently walked up in the front of his Algebra I math class, and in front of seven students and a teacher, shot himself in the head

The school went on immediate lockdown. Emergency responders arrived on scene just minutes later and the injured student was transferred to St. Francis Medical Center in Breckenridge, Minnesota. Friends of the teenager say he was well liked, loved to play the guitar, and they do not believe he was a victim of bullying.

For now, school officials want parents and students to know that counselors will be on hand for anyone that needs them. A deputy will be on hand tomorrow at the school, for anyone who has concerns.

The teenager remains in the hospital.
