Mugs and Hugs | Video

With the number of youth growing throughout Minot, police say keeping our children safe is still a top priority. But, what steps are they taking to ensure our children’s safety?

The Minot Police Department will host their annual Mugs N Hugs program this weekend at Dakota Square Mall. School-aged kids will have the opportunity to put together a DNA packet to use if they were to go missing.

The packet includes personal information, finger prints, and a mug shot.

While there`s not been an increase in the number of abductions throughout Minot, it`s still something police take seriously.

"I think it`s a important step that, you know, people feel that oh, you know, our community is changing, but this is one way that we can get that extra piece of information or get that extra contact that we maybe need," said Margie Zietz, Minot Police Department Crime Prevention Unit.

The Mugs N Hugs will run from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Saturday near JCPenney.

Zietz recommends keeping the DNA kits in a fire proof safe.
