The Great Plains Synfuels plant near Beulah already produces eight coal byproducts and the plant may be adding one more. Dakota Gas is conducting a study to see if a urea production plant would be beneficial, since urea costs less to handle, store and transport than other nitrogen based fertilizers, like anhydrous ammonia.

"The synfuels plant was built to originally to produce natural gas. But the price of that has gets pretty volatile. So what we`ve done is develop these co products and by products to support, or provide additional revenue stream for the plant," said Daryl Hill with Basin Electric.

Based on the results of the study, construction could start in 2014 or 2015.
