Woodcarvers Gather for Showcase | Video

Joel Porter | 10/13/2012

Woodcarvers are gathering in Bismarck this weekend to whittle away the time as they share their hobby. Members of the Flickertail Woodcarvers are hosting their 40th annual showcase at the Doublewood Inn.

This year, professional carver Bob Guge from Illinois is showing off some of his work. Guge specializes in carving songbirds, which have won him world champion honors.

"My dad started out as a decoy maker for hunting. And then he started doing some fancier pieces and that was kind of the initial seed, but I always enjoyed watching birds," he said.

Guge says he uses all power tools to shape the life-like birds. The show will be open again Sunday from noon to 4:30 p.m.

People attending are also invited to sign up for beginner courses.
