Is Your Furnace Winter Ready? | Video

Amy Fox | 10/16/2012

According to Montana-Dakota Utilities, during the winter months, your furnace uses as much energy as your car throughout an entire year. Before you turn on your heat, there are a few maintenance things you may want to look at.

Montana-Dakota Utilities recommends checking your furnace filter and vent regularly. They also say the area around your furnace should be clean.

While furnace technology is improving, it`s always better to play it safe.

"Most of the problems that we would find that would create a dangerous situation is if somebody would bypass some of the controls and just to keep the furnace running. Those controls are there for a reason and that`s to make sure everything is safe,” said Kipp’s Heating and Air Inc. President Kipp Jemson.

Jemson says the average furnace lasts 15-20 years.
