Change Your Clocks and Batteries | Video

Michelle San Miguel | 11/3/2012

When people set their clocks back one hour for the end of Daylight Saving Time, firefighters also encourage people to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years and carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced every six years.

Firefighters say it`s also a good time to vacuum alarms, to reduce the chances of them accidentally going off. Carbon monoxide is known as a silent killer because it`s a colorless and odorless gas, which makes having a detector even more crucial.

"Eespecially this time of the year everybody`s firing up their heating equipment you know so this is a time when we get kind of get a rise in our calls for CO detector activations," said Capt. Jesse Smith with the Bismarck Fire Department.

Firefighters also encourage people to set up a home escape plan in the event of a fire. Have two ways out of every room, a door and a window if possible.
