Off the Beaten Path: Muscle Car Collection | Video

Cliff Naylor | 11/11/2012

This sign in Steve Volla`s yard, directing traffic to the four storage sheds that contain his car collection sparks interest but doesn`t go nearly far enough to describe what`s parked inside. Steve is a full time farmer and a part time motor head.

“Any snowy or rainy day I`m normally working on something,” he said.

Steve has been collecting 1970s muscle cars for over 30 years. He carefully restores all the vehicles that have been whisked away from pastures so they look like they just rolled off the assembly line.

“Fortunate I bought what I did a few years back, still enjoy it now, I keep hunting and every once in awhile find a good deal.”

Anyone who assembles a collection that`s this impressive, needs a green light from his wife to keep going, and Steve`s wife Tammy has gladly agreed to come along for the ride when it comes to the time and money that`s gone into this hobby.

“I don`t mind at all, it`s kinda fun,” she said.

Tammy got a pink Challenger as a 25th anniversary gift. There are only two like it in the world and she drives the piece of automotive history with pride.

Two other cars in this collection that are ticketed as "one of a kind" are the twin hemi school bus and the Cheap Trick truck that doubles as a party wagon.

“Sometimes we have movies playing on the screen, or just music playing, there`s also a fogger that goes off,” Tammy said.

This vehicle shows up at lots of car shows Steve and Tammy attend and on any given day you can find Steve driving any of these muscle cars to town.

“I like to drive pretty much everything I have, that`s why you`ll see bugs on a lot of my cars because I`m not afraid to take them out and use them,” he said.

He`s also not afraid to keep adding to his collection.

“He`s actually talking about building an addition onto the shop, so I guess we`re not done,” Tammy said.

Which means both Steve and Tammy will continue down the road with their hobby and enjoy the rush they get from collecting and driving muscle cars.
