Carbon Monoxide Danger | Video

Jessica Roose | 11/15/2012

It can be a silent killer, which is why experts recommend that you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home, to alert you if there is danger. The Bismarck Fire Department responded to an incident early yesterday morning where two residents were showing signs of carbon monoxide poisoning. Something that could be prevented by having a functional detector in your home.

If any levels of carbon monoxide are detected an alarm will sound and if you hear it, you should act right away.

"Get out of the house. We like you to keep your doors closed and everything, just so we can go back in there an make sure we can find the source of it. But get everyone out, get your family and your pets out of the house and into safety," said Brent Hanson with the Bismarck Fire Department.

But you likely wont know about the danger if you don`t have a detector because you cant hear, smell or taste carbon monoxide. Detectors can be picked up at most hardware stores and can run from about twenty to eighty dollars.

"Get a carbon monoxide detector that has battery backup, that you know in case the power goes out. Every time you change the clocks you should be changing your smoke alarms and your carbon monoxide detectors," Hanson said.

According to the United States Fire Administration each year more than 150 people die from carbon monoxide related deaths. That`s because the symptoms, of a headache, nausea and drowsiness mirror that of the common flu.
