Friends Remember Darren Linde | Video

Retha Colclasure | 12/6/2012

Sgt. 1st Class Darren Linde of Devils Lake was killed in an attack in Afghanistan earlier this week. Linde had served in the U.S. Army and in the Montana Army National Guard, as well as the North Dakota National Guard. Linde had deployed to Iraq in 2007.

His friends say they remember him as a strong leader who would do anything for his soldiers.

"He had a lot of faith in me, being a younger soldier, barely out of basic when we deployed. He put faith in me and let me know I could do it. He was always encouraging and I carry that with me still today," said Sgt. Heather Barta with the North Dakota National Guard.

Sgt. Barta says this loss really hits home, and makes her think about the soldiers who are still deployed. She says it reminds us all that we are still a nation at war.
