Tech Talk: Taking Care of Your Holiday Gifts | Video

Jerame Novak | 12/26/2012

Many of you probably found an electronic gift under your tree, like a music player, a tablet or a new phone. Now that you have your new device, you need to make sure it lasts.

Just a couple of accessories can go a long way.

"The best thing for phones, mp3 players or tablets, it really is important to get a case for it. Get a screen protector for it. Just to make sure that if you drop it, it won`t crack the screen," said Best Buy manager Austin Binstock.

And if you decide to cash in some Christmas money or a gift card on that device you really want... You can buy some extra coverage for it.

"So we have extended service plans that come with them, so they go past the warranty, get some extra protection," said Target executive team leader Kaia Storhaug.

"We also offer what`s called a mobile protection plan, and that`s only $9.99 a month and that covers it for anything. If it were stolen, lost, if you accidentally get it wet. Whatever the case may be," said AT&T area retail sales manager Garrett Kunz.

Or if you have some questions, there is help for you.

"We always have our in-store techs with Geek Squad. Otherwise we always do have 1-800-Geek-Squad also available to answer your questions or to help with setup," Binstock said.

Binstock adds that some of the best items to get a protection plan for are those you plan on carrying with you all the time.
