Kalmio Trial Begins | Video

Julie Leonardi | 1/28/2013

Opening statements in the Omar Kalmio trial started Monday morning. Last week, 12 jurors and four alternates were selected. Kalmio pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the shooting deaths of Sabrina Zephyr, 19, her brother, her mother and her mother`s boyfriend.

Opening statements were delayed an hour because one juror decided not to participate.

Assistant State`s Attorney Sean Kasson delivered a powerful opening statement, explaining how Sabrina Zephier, Jolene Zephier, Dillon Zephier, and Jeremy Longie were murdered by gun shots, and left in cold blood.

Kasson also spoke about the volatile relationship between Sabrina and Kalmio. He disapproved of her drinking and fought with her about money and their baby he fathered.

Shortly after, defense attorney Kerry Rosenquist explained to the jury that what they just heard was only circumstantial evidence.

Elizabeth Lambert, Sabrina Zephier`s roommate was called to the stand, giving a tearful story, describing how she found Sabrina dead that cold January morning.

Later, Lieutenant Jason Sundbakken was called to the stand, he was asked to depict gruesome crime scene photos.

Several others were called to the stand, and the police officers called continued to examine the crime scene photos and noted where bullets were found among both crime scenes.

The trial continues Tuesday morning in the Ward County Court House.
