Education Funding Bill | Video

Jessica Roose | 2/5/2013

House members heard testimony this morning on an education funding bill that would lower homeowners` property taxes. It would increase the amount paid by the state to a school district to about $9,000 per student. In exchange for the increased funding, districts would need to lower property taxes and increase the minimum teacher salary by $5,000 to $27,500.

"This does not require that 50 mills be levied. It does not limit the school district to 50 mills. It simply presumes that the school has the ability and the willingness to levy 50 mills towards their local education," said Governor Jack Dalrymple

Opponents say they are concerned the new formula will hurt school districts with declining enrollment.
