Chancellor Contract | Video

Kristin Clouston | 2/5/2013

A state Senator says he wants to get rid of the Chancellor of Higher Education by buying out his contract. Senator Tony Grindberg (R) of Fargo says Chancellor Ham Shirvani has created a an environment of fear and retaliation.

Shirvani has only been on the job for seven months and says Grindberg has never met with him one on one and says today`s announcement came as a surprise.

"In my 20 years of walking these halls I have never sensed such a strong concern, grave concern for where we are going with the vision and leadership of the North Dakota University System," Grindberg said.

"They wanted us to focus on quality of higher education raising graduation rates, retention rates, having rules and regulations, having structure and these are things we`re trying to build and accomplish and perhaps he doesn`t like what we want to do," Shirvani said.

The bill is being heard in the appropriations committee.
