Main Street Minute: Scheels and the Prom Shop | Video

Retha Colclasure | 2/6/2013

A lot of work on new and expanding businesses moves indoors this time of year. The Scheels store in Kirkwood Mall is about to get a lot bigger.

Work on an expansion is well underway and, when complete, will add another 41,000 square feet to the 100,000 square foot store. The restaurant will be bigger, and offer more seating. The expansion will give the store a more open feel. The store will also expand the offerings currently available.

"We`ll have expanded offerings in those shops that were made larger. Women`s clothing areas will be quite a bit bigger and have more options. I can see us having more running apparel which is an area we haven`t dived into because we didn`t have the space. WIthin our clothing areas you`ll see a broader selection," said manager Dennis Bense.

The first phase of the expansion will be complete around March 17, and the final project is expected to be done by May 1. The expanded Scheels will also feature a mini bowling alley.

The Prom Shop by Mary Me is open in the mall. The seasonal store will be open next to Herbergers until March. Owner Mary Keller says the store has been busier than last year and complements the Minot location well.

Keller says the store has prom dresses for every budget, and offers layaway. She says bling is definitely in this year and muted colors, like nudes, grays, and golds are also popular. In addition to dresses, the store also offers accessories like jewelry and shoes.
