They are out on the streets, working around the clock to help keep the community safe. Today, the Minot Police Department honored one of its own. "This is one of the days that we are happy to announce some things that we have some good news to report,” said Chief Jason Olson.

The Minot Police Department crowded in the training room for the 2012 Police Officer of the Year awards ceremony.

Chief Olson said, "The police officer of the year is Officer Jason Bambenek and he is assigned to night shift as a patrol officer."

Officer Bambenek was nominated and selected by his co-workers for the award for his work with drug recognition and DUI enforcement.

"It`s definitely been a challenge, but I can`t say it`s overwhelming by any means,” Bambenek said. “I mean, it`s obviously been a challenge. We have more people and more crimes as usual."

Bambenek started in 2005. His co-workers say he is always going the extra mile when conducting investigations.

"He leads by example. Each year, Officer Bambenek is at or near the top of DUI arrests," said Olson.

Bambenek says it`s all about team work.

"The community deserves it,” he said. “The community deserves us to do what we need to do as a team to help them out and provide that service to them.”

Bambenek looks forward to continuing to keep the community safe and train his fellow co-workers, so they too can become the police employee of the year.

The department also recognized Christine Roberts as the 2012 Outstanding Police Employee of the Year - Civilian Staff Member.
