Social Security Going Paperless | Video

Amy Fox | 2/20/2013

More than 7,000 North Dakotans get Social Security checks in the mail. But, some big changes are on the way. Starting March 1, North Dakotans will be forced to make all Social Security transactions online.

This includes Social Security, veterans` benefits and Supplemental Security Insurance. If individuals fail to make the switch by the March 1 deadline, a debit card will automatically be sent out. But, there are a few exceptions.

"Anyone over the age of 91 can continue to get their paper checks, if they choose. And also somebody that doesn`t have the mental capacity to make that change or to handle that direct deposit, they will allow that. And, if there are people in rural areas when they don`t have access to direct deposits, they will allow that,” said Lori Scharmer, NDSU Interim Family Economics Specialist.

To make the switch online, you`ll need a paper copy of your Social Security check. For direct deposit, you`ll need your bank or credit union routing and account numbers.
