Today the North Dakota Senate rejected an amendment that would have provided money to buy out Chancellor Ham Shirivani`s contract. Shirvani has been in charge of the university since July and his contract runs through June 2015. Senator Tony Grindberg of Fargo offered an amendment to the higher education funding bill to buy out Shirvani`s contract for about $854,000.

The chairman of the appropriations committee said it shouldn`t be up to them.

"The amendment just provides an option in the future to change course to divert any major damage if things continue on the track they are on," said Senator Tony Grindberg (R) from Fargo.

"That we should be setting the stage for his removal when we have zero, nada, no authority to remove that individual," said Senator Ray Holmberg (R) from Grand Forks.

The amendment failed by one vote.
