Opponents said there`s no evidence that eliminating the tax would make a significant difference.
"I stopped at what I think is the largest mall in North Dakota on my way home, and I couldn`t find a parking place," says Senator Judy Lee of West Fargo. "I think it`s a pretty practical example of how sales tax is not interfering with the ability or willingness of people to purchase clothing."
"It would provide tax relief for all North Dakotans regardless of their financial ability or the prominence in society," contends Fargo Senator George Sinner. "Every single person in North Dakota, by law, is required to wear clothing when they go outdoors."
The bill failed by more than a two to one margin.
