Snow Closes Minot Schools | Video

Amy Fox | 3/4/2013

Snow blowers are being fired up all around Minot as people begin to dig out from the latest snow storm. But, all that snow is making it hard for some to get around. At 4:00 this morning, school administrators were out in the buses, checking the roads and the areas around the school. But, with low visibility and snow covered roads, an automated message was sent to all of the parents informing them of the cancellation.

"We were hearing about additional snow coming our way, as well as winds, which led us to believe conditions might get worse rather than better,” said Minot Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Holm.

When Minot Public Schools makes the decision to cancel school, there are many different things they have to look at besides the main roads.

"Many of the side streets were also covered,” explains Holm. “We have kids coming from rural areas, which certainly take longer to get open. We consulted with officials at MAFB and some of their personnel had driven on Highway 83."

For Central Campus sophomore Taryn Love, a day off from school means staying in. "Well, I have kind of been at home. We have chores to do all day. So, we`ve been doing laundry all day. I don’t want to take a chance with my car in this type of weather."

While delays and closings aren`t something that happens frequently in Minot, as Holm explains, it`s better to err on the side of caution.

"Any time we start to get concerns about safety, we want to make the right decision for safety`s sake knowing it`s an inconvenience to people for us not to have school and we`re sensitive to that. But safety, of course, has to come first."

Students and faculty will make up school on April 2, which is a built in snow day.
