New Pope Is Selected | Video

Julie Leonardi | 3/13/2013

The Catholic Church has a new Pope, Francis I. The announcement was made from the Vatican about 3:00 Central Time, Wednesday afternoon. The new Pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, is from Argentina, the first Pope not from Europe. He is also the first Pope ever to choose the name Francis, after St. Francis Assisi.

Bells were ringing at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Minot for over an hour until the new Pope revealed himself, bringing excitement to Catholics anticipating a new Holy Father.

Father Justin Waltz explained how thrilled he was over the news. “Today`s joy and excitement with Francis I certainly balances out, if not outweighs any loss we experienced as the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI stepped down.”

Pope Francis I is 76 years old, and considered to be a conservative.
