Using Coal Residue for Construction | Video

The coal industry is vibrant in North Dakota. And not only can coal help generate electricity; the fly ash can be used in cement to build roads and buildings. Despite North Dakota`s success in using coal residue, some industry leaders are concerned the Federal Government could deem it as hazardous waste, and ban using it in construction projects.

That`s why the Senate Natural Resources Committee is considering a bill that would allow the product to be used in spite of any action from the Federal Government.

"We want to make sure that there aren`t road blocks put in the way for the continued use and innovation which can occur with the development of this fly ash or coal residue," said lobbyist Shane Goettle.

After reviewing the bill, the committee gave it a do-pass recommendation, and it will head to the Senate floor.
