Damien Schlinger, who works at Sanford, is a three year veteran of St. Baldrick`s Day. He considers it practice for when he really goes bald. "So we started small with just a couple people. Three of them raised a few thousand dollars, and each year it`s just grown bigger and bigger. So it`s been great."

This year, he`s recruited his five year old son Nicholas, who raised $400 on his own and has been telling his friends about this day for a long time.

"Shave my head," Nicholas said.

"How come?" I ask.

"Because we`re helping kids."

"Your hair`s pretty long, isn`t it?"

"Yeah."

"When was the last time you had a haircut?"

"I have no idea."

"You know what it`s going to feel like?"

"Tickle."

"Is it gonna tickle?"

"Yeah."

And as another young man found out, everyone likes to touch it as well. When it comes to father-son activities, this is a relatively new one. But you can bet it`s going to happen over and over again.

In addition to all the conventional fundraising before the event began, there was a silent auction and bake sale as well.
