You may think mixing kids and coffee sounds like a bad idea, but the combination works for a Bismarck school.

It`s not every day you get to have a special guest come in to read to you

"She came in and taught us how to behave and stuff and I thought it was pretty fun," said second grader Conner Wall.

This lady had to wait until she was done reading to drink her coffee, and she brought one of her co-workers along for moral support.

"Her name is Maggie and she`s really soft. At the hospital she comes in to make kids feel better," Wall said.

Only the adults actually drank coffee, but 29 readers from the community spent their breaks reading to students at Miller Elementary. They also explained why reading is important to them and how they use it in their careers.

"It`s just nice for them to make that connection with people, businesses and they just like a new person coming in and reading to them and learning about new careers and they just really love it!" said Miller Social Worker Sarah Holzer.

But the kids weren`t the only ones having fun.

"He knows a lot about old things because it`s an old book, so he must have read it to the kids a lot," said fifth grader Kai Carivea.

This is the third year community members have had coffee with kids and many of them come back every year.
Miller hosts Coffee With Kids in March to honor reading month.
