As a parent your number one priority is keeping your child safe. But, as they grow up they need to start learning how to protect themselves.

The YMCA is teaming up with the Power of the Purse to create a self defense course for teenage girls. Power of the Purse is funding this entire program to help 200 teenage girls participate in the class free of charge. Throughout the course, the teens will be able to learn self defense moves and learn about safety procedures if they ever had to defend themselves.

"Teenagers want to start breaking away from their parents and want to be out with their friends. And, parents need to know when that starts happening that their children know how to be aware of their environment. And, if they are in a situation, they know how to control it," said Amy Moen, YMCA Outreach Coordinator.

"It`s divided with safety and self defense. And, our hopes are that they only have to use the empowerment and the knowledge of the safety part. And, never have themselves put in harm’s way," said Gina Blasing, Power of the Purse President.

Five different classes will be offered starting in April. Moen says they are filling up fast. So, if you want your child to sign up for one of the courses, you can contact the YMCA at 852-0141
