The Marauders finished the conference with a 10-5 record, securing the number five spot in the Northern Sun women`s soccer playoffs. The University of Mary is happy with that seed because the Marauders only have to go to Minot for the first round.

If there`s been a surprise this season for U-Mary, it`s been the defense.

"At the beginning of the year we were really unsure on who was going to play in the back. We had some unlikely injuries and some other players who didn`t return and that has really stepped up thanks to Ashley Akers especially our goal keeper in the back with her leadership but our midfield play has been the key to our success especially these last four games that`s where most of our goals have come from," said head coach Sarah McNulty.

If the game is on the line for the Marauders, most of their goals have come from Alex Backman-Williams. She had another golden goal on Friday.

"I think Alex really thrives in those moments. She`s a gamer and she`s one of the most competitive players I`ve even coaches so I think she enjoys that moment and she really relishes in it as well," McNulty said.

One of the interesting side bars to Wednesdays match-up at Minot State is that Alex`s sister, Taylor, plays for the Beavers.
