Class A Semi-Finals | Video

Lee Timmerman | 10/30/2012

The Bison are having another excellent season, and I`m not talking about North Dakota State. Hazen has played its way to the state semi-finals in Class A football and they host the defending champions on Saturday.

It`s the same situation as last year, but the Blue Jays were the team that advanced to the Dakota Bowl. The Bison beat Heart River in the quarterfinals and it was their regular season meeting with the Cougars that proved to themselves a run like this was possible.

"I think that first game was a turing point for us. We were still playing with a lot of young kids and some kids that had not returned from some injuries and those kids that played that game, the younger group, had realized hey they can play some football and there was a lot of growth from that point on and some of the kids we were missing filtered their way back in and it was one of those deals that the kids knew each week they were getting better and wanted to show it," said Hazen head coach Rick Philion.

Coach Philion says their growth as a team is a direct reflection of gaining game experience and the team also understands that fact.

"At the beginning of the season, we had a lot of guys hurt and toward the end of the season we got everybody healthy and we switched our defense up and it took a while to get used to that and now we`re all doing good and we`re playing our position pretty well. We`re just not trying to do to much and just playing our role," said Hazen senior Michael Maas.

Saturday`s semi-final game in Hazen starts at 1:30. Bison senior Stetson Carr will be in the Sports Spotlight tomorrow.
