Johnny Mangano

In a professional sense, I've been in the TV business only 10 months, but it feels much longer than that. I knew from an early age that since I couldn't play sports at all, I might as well talk about them and work in the business.

I've been involved in television sports since my sophomore year in high school when I began broadcasting junior varsity football and basketball at Carmel High School (Go Hounds). From there I moved on to covering the varsity games where I was fortunate enough to win back to back state championships for my play by play work. I decided to follow my dream and attend Syracuse Univeristy and its outstanding Newhouse School of Public Communicaiton. I worked at the student TV station reporting, anchoring, and hosting a variety fo shows that covered the local Orange sports scene.

Upon graduating last December, I accepted a job at KTVO-TV in Ottumwa, Iowa where I was able to cover many local high school sporting events. It made me realize that in this business, it's important to keep things local. At the beginning of October, I started work here at KMOT. I can already tell I'm going to love this place. It's a tremendous sports scene with a Division 2 university and three high schools with great tradition. With this region's population booming, I can only suspect that the sports scene will only get bigger. Whereas some people decry sports as trivial, I feel like they're extremely important. Some of my greatest life lessons I've learned have been through sports and to see whole towns come and support their local team is refreshing. There's a sense of community and I love that.

In my free time, I love playing basketball and golf (can't wait for the golf courses to reopen in the spring). I like to read, watch movies, and listen to music (rap, rock, blues, soul are all musts). I also like to call myself a sports nerd, watching any game that's on and devouring the history. My teams are the Pacers, Colts, Mets, New York Rangers, and Syracuse. I can't wait to bring you the local sports day in and day out. Have a story idea you want to bounce off me?
