Public School Reconstruction

Posted: Updated:

Many public schools were damaged in the 2011 flood, but fortunately, all but Erik Ramstad Middle will be ready next school year.

"Even though we're not going to make it in time for school to start, we're very happy to get in there by Thanksgiving and the progress that we're making on such a massive project," says Jim Rostad, president of Minot Public School Board.

Ramstad Middle School was damaged in the 1969 flood as well, so the school board decided to start from scratch, and build on North Hill.

"The idea of rebuilding on that location was just not feasible. It was a tough decision; the school was a part of that community for a long time. But at the end of the day, the board was faced with some pretty tough decisions. One of those decisions was it wouldn't make sense to build another building in that location without the promise of future flood protection," says Mark Vollmer, Minot Public Schools superintendent.

The school will have a football field, a pool, media center, and will have room for 720 students.

"We think that Minot Public School facilities will be in better shape than they have ever been before. They will be more efficient," says Rostad.

Longfellow Elementary will have four classes for each grade. The new edition will combine with a part of the old building that's getting completely revamped. That means more classrooms, better technologies, air conditioning and even lockers.

"We're going to be doubling the size of it, a more modern up-to-date school. It will provide an excellent facility for our elementary students to receive an education," says Rostad.

"The flood was a tough thing. It was tough on the residents in the valley. Getting back into Longfellow is going to be a good thing for the community of Minot. It shows that we're back and we're ready to roll," says Vollmer.

Minot's a growing community, in the past six years it's gained 1,000 students. So, more space is necessary.
