Six Men Ordained to the Diocesan Priesthood

Posted:

The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit was filled with dozens of priests and hundreds of parishioners to celebrate the sacrament of holy orders for six new members of the priesthood.

"It doesn't feel real. You know you dream of this day and you wait for it and all the sudden it's here and it's quite amazing to think about," says Rev. Jared Johnson.

Reverend Jared Johnson says he has been working towards this dream for eight years.
It was something he started to think about when he was a junior in high school, trying to figure out what to do with his future.

"One question that so many of us should ask more often is what does the Lord want? He created me, he gave me life and so this is in many ways a return to him for all the good things he's done for me," says Johnson.

Bishop David Kagan says it's a unique experience for so many priests to be ordained on the same day. In a normal year there are usually only one or two.

"It's just a happy day for everyone but especially those parishes where they grew up. It's kind of a badge of honor if you will, that their parish has given the church a priest," says Kagan.

These priests will now be sent out to serve many of the people who attended the ordination ceremony in parishes all over western North Dakota.

Rev. Johnson will stay in Bismarck and serve as an associate pastor at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and chaplin at St. Mary's High School.

"A bishop is of course proud of all his priests but I think he has a particular interest and an attachment to those young priests, as they come to the priesthood. As they begin their new lives as priests on their first assignments. Those are always very special times," says Kagan.

Next year there will be one priest ordained, and there won't be any in 2015.
