Property Tax Relief

Posted: Updated:

Despite increased enrollment and construction of three new schools, the Bismarck school board is planning to bring property tax relief to homeowners.

"You know, we talk about mills and levies and all of that. But finding out and being able to see the actual dollar relief is real important because that is what the taxpayer looks at," said board member Scott Halvorson.

In a special board meeting, members looked at the district's budget, and determined they could provide a 20% reduction in property taxes. So for a home worth roughly $150,000, that is a savings of almost $200.  Although the board did not act on any of the information, the superintendent says it would take a lot for that relief to change.

"As we go back and take a look at our existing needs, we know we are going to still need some books and a few supplies. But we do not expect to see a radical change unless our enrollment radically changes. Then that is something that would drive the 20% reduction to be a different number," said Bismarck Public School Superintendent Tamara Uselman.

The district is able to provide this relief thanks to the legislature. The state took over a portion of property taxes and also gave school district additional funding.  The board plans to keep a close eye on enrollment and reassess the district's needs by the first meeting in August.
