Tech Talk: Mobile POS Devices

Posted: Updated:

A new technology is bringing the sales counter to you.

"We call it the Libby, because it liberates us from having to stand behind a permanent cash wrap," says merchandise execution leader Stacey Torkelson.

Sales associates can grab an item, scan it and process credit cards, all on a mobile point-of-sale device.

The handheld iPod Touch devices are already in use at the Bismarck JC Penney's location.

"We are really excited to have this because it allows us to serve our customers better. It allows us to get out on the floor and be more interactive with them and to help find products for them and fill their needs," says Torkelson.

Torkelson says it's about using current staff more efficiently, especially in departments that don't have a sales counter. And customers are taking notice.

"It's definitely different. It's handy. I mean, she was right here when I was ready to check out and I didn't have to wait in line or anything. So, it was good," says shopper Jennifer Wolff.

"I think the first time they see it, they are really surprised that we have introduced this sort of technology. But, they are really excited when they realize they don't have to go up to a register and stand in line to wait," says Torkelson.

The Libby also helps with merchandising. Associates can scan bar codes to check prices and familiarize themselves with promotions and floor campaigns.

The store currently has about 25 Libbys in use.
