House Fails to Pass Farm Bill

Posted: Updated:

Farmers and ranchers had high hopes that a new farm bill would come about after the Senate passed its version last week.

But those hopes were dashed today after the House failed to pass its version.

The bill funds both safety net programs like crop insurance for farmers and ranchers and also funds the supplemental nutrition assistance program, or food stamps.

The North Dakota Farm Bureau says it's terribly disappointed.

"It's just like any business, when they don't know what the rules are or how it's going to affect them, they tend to sit on their hands and not do anything, and I think that's certainly not good for our economy when we need to grow."

The farm bill is typically passed every five years.

North Dakota's lone representative, Republican Kevin Cramer, voted for the bill.
