Men Fight to Get Abortion Law on Ballot

Posted: Updated:

Opponents of the new abortion laws have been vocal in their opposition.

Some want to get those laws put on the ballot, and the two men behind the effort aren't who you might expect.

"We're on opposite sides of the issue. He is a strong abortion supporter, and I'm a strong anti-abortion supporter," says Gary Hangsleben.

He says he and Roland Reimers both agree allowing the issue to go to a vote would be the best form of democracy.

"So everybody in North Dakota would be able to vote for it. Up or down, yes or no," says Hangsleben.

But not everyone against the legislation wanted the issue to go to a vote, including the director of the only abortion clinic in the state.

"We cannot take these state by state by state. This has to be an effort that with the legal remedies we will pursue with the help of the Center for Reproductive rights, that hopefully it will have an impact elsewhere," says Tammi Kromenaker.

But Hangsleben says Kromenaker took her opposition too far.

"She made some failed threats to me in an email, and I'm sure that she had got a phone tree across the whole state calling everybody not to support us and not to sign and so forth," says Hangsleben.

"The facts are that neither myself, the clinic nor any agent of ours in any way attempted to contact, interact with or intimidate Mr. Hangsleben. We publicly stated that the referral effort was not in the best interest of the women in our area that are served by Red River Women's clinic. This is about him and not what's best for the women in North Dakota," says Kromenaker.

But Hangsleben says he won't give up. He plans to take the issue to the North Dakota Supreme Court.
