Caution: Construction Zone

Posted: Updated:

We are in the heart of construction season.  With the long winter, road work in Minot started a few weeks later than expected.  And, now, construction crews are working to play catch-up.

The sound of construction can be heard all throughout Minot as the city continues to work on its road projects.  And, there's a lot of work to be done.

"We had a late thaw that set us back by about a month, and then the rains we've had that really set us back by about three weeks.  So, we're about two months behind," says City of Minot engineer Lance Meyer.

Detour signs can be seen all throughout Minot.  But, crews are working around the clock to make sure all the improvements are made by the start of fall.

Meyer says, "Because of the late start and the amount of work we have to get done, they have to work weekends to stay on track."

From patching and striping to repaving streets, projects are going on all over town; but, with that come some inconveniences for drivers.

"Most of the work we do around town is overlays," says Meyer.  "Most of those take place on interior roadways.  It's almost impossible to completely shut down. So, a lot of times, they try to do half at a time, or they will have flaggers or something that help to channel traffic around while they're doing work."

But, if the city doesn't take the time to make these improvements now, it could lead to more problems down the road.

Meyer says, "If you delay the work, the streets are going to fall apart even worse and it gets to the point where a maintenance project is no longer feasible.  You have to completely reconstruct the roadway and that takes quite a bit longer than a month long project. That's a whole season long project."

While this hasn't been the typical construction season, construction crews are trying to make the most of their time while the good weather lasts.

"Sometimes, you just have to work with what you got.  And, you know, with the weather that we had, there's nothing we can do about it, but to work through it and try to get as much work done as fast and open it up back to the public," said Meyer.

A contractor compliance task force was in Minot today, conducting random compliance checks at various construction sites.
