Tech Talk: Windows 8

Posted: Updated:

Microsoft has heard a lot of complaints since the launch of Windows 8. While the operating system itself is significant upgrade, it's user interface is not what many people were expecting.

Kristi Heupel recently bought a new laptop for her son, Harley.

"It was a nightmare. Even just trying to change the desktop to something personalized for him took me forever," says Heupel.

And she's not alone. Heupel is one of many frustrated Windows 8 users.

"The biggest complaint, I think, most people have about Windows 8 is the simple fact that they don't know where anything went," says Jerod Hawk, owner of Amega Computers.

Starting over means learning an entirely different user interface.

"Windows 8 is pretty much a completely different operating interface than Windows 7. And every time they do that, they put people a year behind trying to learn a new operating system," says Hawk.

Perhaps the most confusing change is the absence of the traditional start button.

For those who want the start button back, there are applications like Classic Shell are available.
But it is still important to learn the new operating system.

"You don't want to drive a Model T on the interstate. You want a car that handles well. It's the same here. You have to do it so you can be efficient with those operating systems. There's a lot of value in exploiting the new features, a lot of efficiencies that you gain just by using touch or speaking interfaces. And Windows 8 is going to do that better than Windows 7 or XP," says Dean Glatt, North Dakota IT department.

Glatt says Windows 8 is a technically superior operating system.  And it's much faster than previous versions.

But Heupel wants to see a few changes.

"The start button needs to come back. Everyone knows that the start button is where you go. And not having that was really the most frustrating thing of all," says Heupel.

Microsoft is currently developing Windows 8.1, an update to the Windows 8 operating system. And rumor has it, the start button will be back.

Until then, users can familiarize themselves with the new operating system or download one of the Classic Shell applications.
